14. Inequality and child welfare

Professor Paul Bywaters on the relationship between income inequality, poverty and child welfare interventions in the UK.

Research has identified a relationship between income inequality and child abuse and neglect in the USA. In areas where income inequality and child poverty rates are high, there are higher rates of child maltreatment.

This episode features a conversation with Paul Bywaters who has explored if the same relationship exists in the UK. Paul is Professor of Social Work at Huddersfield University and has been leading research on inequalities in children’s social care for the past ten years. His research highlights the importance of inequality for child welfare and how social work practice needs to be more poverty-aware.
