33. Kinship care

Dr Paul Shuttleworth talks about his research on children’s recognition of family life in kinship care arrangements.

Kinship care is a relatively under-developed area of research, though it is increasing in prominence in the UK. Listening to children’s experiences of kinship care is vital to understanding its value and the important role it can play in their lives.

In this episode I speak to Dr Paul Shuttleworth about research he has recently completed which focuses on children’s views of kinship care. We discuss one of his papers from this project which focuses on the recognition of family life by children living in kinship care arrangements.

Paul has been working in social care for around 25 years and social work for over 15 years, mainly with children and families. Paul’s research interests include kinship care, the meaning of permanence, ‘what matters’ approaches, and child participation. He has just been awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Economic and Social Research Council to continue his research. He also hosts the podcast Sarah and Paul Do Do Social Work.
