34. Parents’ views of social workers

Dr Mary Baginsky asks parents about their relationship with their social worker and provides an insight into where resources are required to make improvements.

What do parents actually think about their social workers? We may be able to guess, or we may have asked this question to parents ourselves, but are the answers we receive honest and represent the full picture? When this question is asked by an independent researcher, we should be able to get closer to the truth.

In the context of an evaluation of Signs of Safety , Dr Mary Baginsky spoke to 270 families who were in contact with children’s social care about their relationship with their social worker. The findings reveal areas for improvement and point to where additional resources are required.

Mary is a senior research fellow in the Health and Social Care Workforce Research Unit in the Policy Institute at King’s College London where most of her research has been on practice in, and training for, children’s social care.
