19. Intimate partner violence against men

Dr Elizabeth Bates explores the experiences of men who have experienced intimate partner violence

Victims of intimate partner violence are predominantly women, though about a third are men. When seeking support, men face stigma and many of their support needs remain unmet. It is likely that social workers will encounter men who have experienced intimate partner violence, so it is important to understand more about their needs.

This episode discusses a study conducted by Dr Elizabeth Bates which explores men’s experiences of coping after intimate partner violence. She asked the men to bring and talk about photos in interviews, which helped to elicit their post-separation experiences.

Dr Elizabeth Bates is a Principal Lecturer in Psychology and Psychological Therapies at the University of Cumbria. Her research specialism is working with male victims of domestic violence and she is also a trustee of the UK charity ManKind Initiative.
