9. Making fathers relevant

Dr Jon Symonds explores how fathers can be encouraged to be involved in parenting programmes.

Fathers are often not involved in parenting programmes. However, social workers can encourage their involvement by enquiring about them in initial conversations.

This episode discusses a study conducted by Dr Jon Symonds which used conversation analysis to explore how practitioners introduced the possibility of both parents being involved in parenting programmes. It concludes with some clear recommendations for social work practice.

Dr Jon Symonds researches fathers, parenting and family support at the University of Bristol. Jon is a registered social worker and a lecturer. He is part of a group organising an online two day conference focusing on social work and conversation analysis on 14-15th December 2021.
