Prof John Devaney of the University of Edinburgh on inequality of experiences of domestic abuse among mothers of young children

In this episode I talk to Professor John Devaney, the Centenary Chair of Social Work at the University of Edinburgh. John’s research relates to issues regarding family violence and has published numerous papers on this topic. His latest book has just been published by Routledge – The Routledge International Handbook of Domestic Violence and Abuse – of which he is the lead editor.

We discuss his paper which presents findings of a national survey on the experiences of domestic abuse among mothers of young children in Scotland. This study found that mothers with a low income were far more likely to report experiences of domestic abuse than those with higher incomes. Younger mothers were also at an increased risk of domestic abuse. We discuss the paper in some depth and its implications for social work practice. The full paper can be downloaded here:
