29. Mindfulness for social workers

Dr Alan Maddock discusses a bespoke mindfulness-based programme for social workers which can help to combat stress and improve wellbeing.

It is important for social workers to look after ourselves so that we can be more effective in our work. Mindfulness is increasingly used as a way of achieving self-care in the profession and this episode explores a bespoke programme for social workers which has indicative signs of effectiveness across a range of outcomes.

I speak to Dr Alan Maddock who developed a mindfulness-based social work and self-care programme, inspired by a 10-day silent meditation in India. He argues that setting aside a little time for mindfulness each day is important for our mental health and wellbeing.

Dr Alan Maddock is an Assistant Professor in Social Work at Trinity College, Dublin. Alan’s research interests are in mental health, with a particular interest in how mindfulness-based programmes might improve mental health outcomes.
