Mengyao Lu unpacks child sexual abuse prevention programmes to make it easier to set up one that can be effective.
Social workers often intervene with children and families after abuse or neglect is reported. However, there is a role for social work expertise in prevention programmes.
School-based child sexual abuse prevention programmes have been found to be effective, but less is known about how these programmes work. Dr Mengyao Lu has undertaken a realist review of these programmes which explores their mechanisms and elements. Unpacking these components helps to improve transparency and makes it simpler to set up programmes which can be effective.
Dr. Mengyao Lu is a Research Fellow at Childlight, the Global Data Institute for Child Safety, University of Edinburgh. Mengyao’s research looks at sexual violence against children, particularly primary child sexual abuse prevention programmes in school settings.
